Esta obra chegounos reducida a 15 libros através dun epítome medieval. Ten a forma dun diálogo entre varios eruditos reunidos na casa do rico romano Publio Livio Laurencio. Os temas de que falan inclúen a comida, o luxo, a dieta, a saúde, as relacións sexuais, a pornografía, a música, o humor e a lingüística.
