It seems to me, that php-fpm has a bug since version >=7.3.0, >=7.2.8 and >=7.1.20 (that comes from here, I thing so: bug #73342). I have tested this on Debian 9.6 and 9.8.

Can you please confirm that this is happening to you too? I don't want to fill a bug report onto bug.php.net and it really was not a bug.

How I reproduce it?
edit php-fpm.conf and put some time into process_control_timeout:

[global]
process_control_timeout = 20s

Then open 2 terminals, in one call: watch -n0,1 "systemctl status php-fpm.service".

On the other term call kill -USR2 PHPFPMPID*.

then see how it waits the 20 seconds and force the kill (SIGTERM) onto all the childrens. If you try this into 7.0 or prior to 7.2.8 or 7.1.20 it works.

*: PHPFPMPID: The current process ID of the Master.

Can anybody try and confirm it? Thanks a lot!

  • It can be reproduced, but how does that actually help you ? If you don't actually use the specific function in that given situation it does not affect you in any way.

  • @Overmind I will open a bug on php.net. This is affecting our service and I only need confirmation from other sources because it seems that nobody in the entire Internet is gracefully reloading php-fpm.
