Winchester é unha cidade e capital do condado de Hampshire, Inglaterra. A cidade atópase no corazón da cidade de Winchester, un distrito do goberno local e está situada no extremo occidental do parque nacional de South Downs, ó longo do curso do río Itchen.[1] Atópase a 98 quilómetros ó suroeste de Londres e 21.9 km de Southampton, a súa cidade máis achegada. Segundo o censo de 2011, Winchester tiña unha poboación de 45 184. O distrito da cidade de Winchester inclúe as vilas de Alresford e Bishop's Waltham, cunha poboación total de 116 800.[2]


Winchester desenvolveuse a partir da vila romana de Venta Belgarum, que á súa vez era un oppidum da Idade de Ferro. O principal atractivo de Winchester é a súa catedral, unha das meirandes catedrais de Europa, que salienta por ter a nave máis longa e a maior lonxitude total de tódalas catedrais góticas de Europa. A cidade alberga a Universidade de Winchester e o Winchester College, a escola pública máis antiga do Reino Unido que aínda emprega os seus edificios orixinais.
