Cualifícase de estéquedon (do grego antigo στοιχηδόν / stoikhêdón, «en ringleira, en fila» [adverbio], derivado do verbo στοιχέω / stoikhéô, «marchar en ringleira, estar en liña») o trazado dun sistema de escritura que aliña as letras á vez horizontal e verticalmente, ao xeito do aliñamento dun exército. As letras ocupan, logo, un espazo idéntico independente de cal for a súa envergadura (por exemplo i e m ocupan o mesmo espazo) e cada liña comprende un número constante de signos, cousa que trae como consecuencia que unha palabra poida atoparse dacabalo sobre dúas liñas.


O estéquedon foi empregado con frecuencia polo alfabeto grego, en especial nas inscricións monumentais do século V antes da nosa era (sobre todo en Atenas). Unhas inscricións tales son prácticas para a transcrición epigráfica de documentos lacunares: sábese en efecto desde principio cantas letras se deben atopar por liña (sobre todo porque o espazo separador de palabras non era habitual).
