O terremoto do Océano Índico de 2004, coñecido na comunidade científica como o terremoto de Sumatra-Andamán, foi un terremoto submarino ocorrido ás 00:58:53 UTC (07:58:53 hora local) do 26 de decembro de 2004. O terremoto provocou un tsunami que se converteu nun dos máis mortíferos da historia moderna, matando entre 240 000 e 300 000 persoas. A magnitude do terremoto estímase que foi de 9,1[1], o que o converte dun dos cinco terremotos máis fortes dende 1900. En maio de 2005, os científicos revelaron que o tremor no epicentro durou case dez minutos, cando a maioría dos terremotos non duran máis duns poucos segundos, o que causou que o planeta enteiro vibrase cando menos uns poucos centímetros.


O terremoto orixinouse no Océano Índico, ao norte da illa de Simeulue, ao noroeste de Sumatra, Indonesia, o tsunami que seguiu devastou as costas de Indonesia, Sri Lanka, o sur da India, Tailandia e outros países, con ondas de ata 30 m, o que causou grandes perdas e mortes en zonas tan afastadas, como a costa leste de África.
