Constantinopla (Nome romano: Constantinopolis; Grego: Konstantinoupolis ou Κωνσταντινούπολις) é o antigo nome da cidade de Istambul, na Turquía. O nome orixinal era Bizancio (Bυζάντιον en grego).


Constantinopla foi a capital do Imperio Bizantino, tamén coñecido como Imperio Romano de Oriente. Foi capturada e saqueada pola Cuarta Cruzada en 1204 e despois recapturada polas forzas de Nicea, baixo as ordes de Miguel VIII Paleólogo en 1261.


"Constantinopla" é unha adaptación de Konstantinoupolis, que significa "Cidade de Constantino". O nome é unha referencia ao emperador romano Constantino I o Grande que converteu esta cidade na capital do imperio romano, o 11 de maio de 330. Constantino chamouna "Nova Roma", pero o nome non prosperou. Posteriormente Constantinopla quedou como capital do Imperio Romano de Oriente e, tras a caída do Imperio Romano de Occidente, como capital do Imperio Bizantino.


Constantinopla e o Imperio Bizantino caeron finalmente ante o Imperio Otomán a 29 de maio de 1453. Nos tempos otománs, ambos os nomes Constantinopla e Istambul foron usados, a pesar dos occidentais invariabelmente usaron o nome Constantinopla. Istambul só se tornou o nome oficial en 1930. Cando a República da Turquía foi fundada en 1923, a capital moveuse de Istambul a Ancara.


En tempos bizantinos, os gregos chamaban Constantinopla "i Poli" (a cidade), unha vez que era o centro do mundo grego e durante a maioría do período bizantino a maior cidade da Europa.


O nome Istambul é unha tradución ao turco de "Constantinopla". A crenza de que vén da frase grega "is tin Poli" (cara a cidade) é apenas unha lenda folclórica.
