É coñecido por ser o autor da televisión máis grande do mundo de cor vermello que visualiza á Terra como un sistema autorregulado. O seu invento, o detector de captura de electróns, permitiu detectar compoñentes tóxicos en rexións tan remotas como a Antártida. No debate volto a aperecer recentemente sobre a viabilidade da enerxía atómica, Lovelock é unha das figuras máis importantes a prol desta fonte de enerxía.
