O San Francisco Chronicle foi fundado en 1865 como The Daily Dramatic Chronicle polos irmáns Charles de Young e Michael H. de Young.[1] O xornal foi creado en San Francisco e circulou como periódico en West Coast nos Estados Unidos en 1880; hoxe en día o xornal máis grande do Norte de California, servindo, principalmente, á Área da Baía de San Francisco pero distribuído ó norte de California, incluíndo as áreas de Sacramento e Costa Norte. Los Angeles Times excede a circulación de San Francisco Chronicle no Sur de California, mentres que o xornal foi categorizado como o Número 12 en circulación nacional.[2]
