Gray contribúe regularmente con The Guardian, The Times Literary Supplement e New Statesman, onde é o crítico principal de libros.

Gray escribiu varios libros moi influentes, incluíndo False Dawn: The Delusions of Global Capitalism (1998), que argumenta que a globalización do mercado libre é un proxecto inestable en proceso de desintegración; Straw Dogs: Thoughts on Humans and Other Animals (2003), onde ataca o humanismo, unha cosmovisión que Gray ve como orixinaria das relixións; e Black Mass: Apocalyptic Religion and the Death of Utopia (2007), unha crítica do pensamento utópico no mundo moderno.
