A Contrarreforma, tamén denominada Reforma Católica, é o nome dado ao movemento creado no seo da Igrexa Católica en resposta á Reforma Protestante iniciada con Lutero a partir de 1517. En 1543, a Igrexa Católica convocou o Concilio de Trento establecendo, entre outras medidas, a continuación do Tribunal do Santo Oficio (Inquisición), a creación do Index Librorum Prohibitorum, cunha relación de libros prohibidos pola igrexa, e o incentivo á catequese dos pobos do Novo Mundo, coa formación de novas ordes relixiosas dedicadas a esa empresa, incluíndo a Compañía de Xesús. Outras medidas incorporaron a reafirmación da autoridade papal, o mantemento do celibato, a creación do catecismo e seminarios e a supresión de abusos mediante indulxencias.
