Descrición |


A superfamilia foi descrita en 1838 polo naturalista francés Charles Lucien Bonaparte, nun traballo publicado en Nuovi Ann. Sci. Nat., 2 (1): 112.[1]



Etimoloxía |


O nome científico da subfamilia, Petauroidea, está formado sobre a raíz do nome so seu xénero tipo, Petaurus, coa adición da desidencia do latín científico -oidea, plural de -oideus, derivado do grego antigo εἴδος eídos, 'aspecto', 'aparencia', 'forma'. Literalmente, "os parecidos aos Petuarus".


Polo que respecta a Petuarus, é un derivado do latín clásico petaurista, substanfivo feminino que significa 'equilibrista', 'acróbata'.
