Os Balrogs son criaturas demoníacas ficticias pertencentes ó legendarium de J. R. R. Tolkien, que teñen a habilidade de manexar o lume, e outros poderes do mal. O nome Balrog é unha palabra sindarin que significa "demo de poder", sendo Valarauko a súa versión en quenya. (Vala, significa "poder", rauko[r], demo). Aínda que a súa primeira aparición expresa foi na novela O Señor dos Aneis, existen mencións noutros libros anteriores de Tolkien, como O Silmarillion.

Os balrogs son Maiar ó servizo de Melkor e Sauron descritos como seres enormes e ameazantes, coa habilidade de controlar o lume, a escuridade e as tebras. Inducían terror en inimigos e aliados por igual, e a mera mención do seu nome facía tremer ós máis valentes guerreiros. Acostumaban ir armados con látegos ígneos de varias puntas, e ás veces con enormes espadas de chamas.


Aínda que nos libros déixase ver pouco da intelixencia e motivacións dos balrogs, suponse que tiñan grandes intelectos, debido ó seu pasado Maia. Os balrogs foron os únicos subordinados de Melkor con xenuína lealdade cara ó seu señor, como se ve cando o rescataron de Ungoliant.
