MusicBrainz é un proxecto cuxo obxectivo é a creación dunha base de datos musical de contido aberto. MusicBrainz recolle información sobre música gravada, nomes de artistas, títulos, listaxes de cancións, datas de publicación, etc.[1] O 30 de xaneiro de 2016, MusicBrainz contiña información de arredor dun millón de artistas, un millón e medio de álbums e máis de quince millóns e medio de gravacións.[2]


Os rexistros fanse grazas ao traballo de editores voluntarios que seguen unhas normas de edición precisas. As obras rexistradas poden conter outra información como a data de gravación, país de orixe ou a duración das cancións. Os usuarios finais poden utilizar programas que se comunican con MusicBrainz para etiquetar os seus arquivos de son como MP3, Ogg Vorbis ou AAC.
