Os romaneses[16] (en romanés: români) son un grupo étnico que habita principalmente en Romanía que comparte unha cultura, uns devanceiros e unha lingua común, a lingua romanesa. Autores importantes consideran que os moldavos tamén son romaneses, o cal os convertería en predominantes tamén en Moldavia.[17][18] Os romaneses forman minorías étnicas en diversos países veciños.


Os romaneses son unha nación no sentido de ethnos (en romanés, neam); é dicir, a nación defínese máis polo sentido de pertenza a unha cultura romanesa común, a un mesmo grupo humano e a unha comunidade que fala romanés como lingua materna que non pola cidadanía ou polo feito de vivir nun país en concreto. A lei de cidadanía romanesa,[19] promulgada en marzo do ano 1991, estabelece que a segunda e a terceira xeración que descende de romaneses teñen dereito a obter a cidadanía romanesa se falan un romanés fluído e demostran un coñecemento suficiente da historia e a cultura romanesas. Arredor do mundo, uns vinte e catro millóns de persoas teñen o romanés como lingua nai.[20]
