Scripter goes to 'Children of Men'

By Borys Kit

The author and screenwriting team behind "Children of Men" have won the 19th annual USC Libraries Scripter Award.

British writer P.D. James penned the book, her 12th, in 1992. Screenwriters Alfonso Cuaron, Timothy J. Sexton, David Arata, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby adapted the screenplay for the movie, which was directed by Cuaron and distributed by Universal Pictures.

The Scripter, awarded annually, honors writers for achievement in adaptation among English-language films released during the previous year and based on a book, novella or short story. It is the only award that recognizes both the authors and screenwriters of a produced book-to-film adaptation.

"Children of Men" beat out finalists "The Devil Wears Prada," "The Illusionist," "The Last King of Scotland" and "Notes on a Scandal."

"This year's five nominated films were, all of them, heartfelt and elegantly wrought," said USC School of Cinematic Arts Writing Division chair Howard Rodman, who also is a screenwriter, journalist and novelist. "In that heady company, 'Children of Men' was first among equals. (The team) took P.D. James' bracingly dystopic novel and crafted from it a film at once brave, subtle (and) shocking. This is writing and screenwriting of the highest order."

James has published 19 books in her career as a writer and as a member of the British Civil Service and magistrate.

The winners will be feted Feb. 18 at the annual black-tie gala at USC's Edward L. Doheny Jr. Memorial Library in Los Angeles.
