Emmanuel Lubezki AMC ASC
Adelaide - 5 May 2007
Mexican filmmaker Emmanuel Lubezki AMC ASC has been awarded the 2007 ACS International Award for Cinematography for Children of Men.
In a taped message from Emmanuel said "Its a big honour. I'm humbled and surprised by the news".
Lubezki began his career in Mexican film and television productions in the late 1980s. His first American production was the 1993 independent film Twenty Bucks, which followed the journey of a single twenty-dollar bill.
He has worked with fellow Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón five times, beginning with 1995's A Little Princess. The film earned Lubezki his first Academy Award nomination. Lubezki and Cuarón have been friends since they were teenagers and attended the same film school at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
Lubezki has also worked with a variety of major directors, including Mike Nichols (The Birdcage), Tim Burton (Sleepy Hollow), Michael Mann (Ali), and Terrence Malick (The New World). As of 2007, he has been nominated for four Academy Awards.
Lubezki's most recent collaboration with Cuarón, Children of Men (2006), has received universal acclaim. The film utilized a number of new technology and distinctive techniques. The "roadside ambush" scene was shot in one extended take utilizing a special camera rig invented by Doggicam systems, developed from the company's Power Slide system. For the scene, a vehicle was modified to enable seats to tilt and lower actors out of the way of the camera. The windshield of the car was designed to tilt out of the way to allow camera movement in and out through the front windscreen. A crew of four, including Lubezki, rode on the roof. Children of Men also features a six minute battle sequence composed of roughly five seamless edits, a rarely used technique first utilized in Alfred Hitchcock's Rope.

About the Film
Children of Men is a 2006 dystopian science fiction film loosely adapted from P.D. James' 1992 novel The Children of Men. The film was directed by Alfonso Cuarón and stars Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, Claire-Hope Ashitey, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Caine.
Set in an apocalyptic United Kingdom of 2027, two decades of global infertility have left Homo sapiens with less than a century to survive. Societal collapse, terrorism, and environmental destruction follow in the wake of impending extinction, with the last functioning government persecuting illegal immigrants as refugees flood the borders. In the midst of this chaos, civil servant Theo Faron (Clive Owen) must transport a pregnant African refugee (Claire-Hope Ashitey) to the Human Project, the greatest hope for the future of humanity.
The film was released on September 22, 2006 in the UK and on December 25 in the US, with critics noting the relationship between the Christmas opening and the film's themes of hope, redemption, and faith. Described as a companion piece to Cuarón's Y tu mamá también (2001), both films examine contemporary social, economic and political issues in the context of a road film.
Children of Men was recognized for its achievements in screenwriting, cinematography, art direction, and innovative single-shot action sequences, receiving three Academy Awards nominations and winning two BAFTA awards.
