O Parlamento é a asemblea dos representantes electos polos cidadáns nos réximes democráticos. É o órgano constitucional dun Estado que ten atribuída a misión principal de expresar a vontade deste, elaborando e aprobando normas xurídicas de carácter xeral e intervindo na integración e funcionamento doutras Institucións do Estado.


Nalgúns países, o parlamento está formado por dúas asembleas separadas, por veces chamadas Cámaras do Parlamento, que poden resultar de eleccións ou nomeacións separadas e poden ter poderes diferenciados e varias designacións de acordo coa Constitución de cada país:


  • A Cámara Alta, Cámara Superior ou Senado. No Reino Unido, é oficialmente chamada Cámara dos Lores.

  • A Cámara Baixa, Cámara Inferior, Cámara dos Comúns ou Cámara Federal.

En moitos países, o parlamento é denominado Congreso (por exemplo, nos Estados Unidos de América) e noutros "Asemblea Nacional" (ou "Asemblea do Pobo", como na China Comunista).
