Atlas of Rice & World Rice Statistics
Atlas of Ri ce
IRRI's Atlas
of Rice, which illustrates rice area by type of culture for South,
Southeast, and East Asia, provides information about the different rice
ecosystems and relevant statistics in rice production. IRRI's GIS-IP Lab
facility prepared this atlas by making use of state- of-the-art tools such as
Geographic Information System (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), Global Positioning
System (GPS) and other related technologies in the conduct of rice-related
research.
Rice around the World
World rice production in 2004 was just under 610 million t. At least 114 countries grow rice and more than 50 have an annual production of 100,000 t or more. Asian farmers produce about 90% of the total, with two countries, China and India, growing more than half the total crop.

World Rice Statistics
World rice statistics (WRS), which is published periodically by IRRI, presents comprehensive time series information related to rice. Data on rice production, trade, consumption, inputs, prices, and other related information are compiled from international and national statistical sources, personal communications, and from responses to questionnaires sent by
IRRI's Social Sciences Division. This edition of WRS
includes data on rice area and production up to 2005 in some cases and most other
information up to 1999 or 2000. We will continue to update the data as they
become available. See recent updates highlighted in
red below.
WSR was prepared by Josephine H. Narciso under the guidance of IRRI
economist Mahabub Hossain. In this edition, efforts were made to expand geographical coverage wherever
possible. Also, the section on modern varieties and input use was enhanced and the genealogy of IRRI-bred varieties
has been included.
We appreciate the cooperation of national agencies and universities, the IRRI international outreach projects, and private corporations in providing
needed statistics..
