Apologies if this is worded oddly, not too sure how to put this problem into words.

We've got a Server 2012 R2 std instance (hostname: server-file) that's got two network interfaces, one for the internal, physical network, and the other is a Hamachi VPN virtual interface used for connecting multiple, off-site buildings together.

We're running into an issue where this Server 2012 instances' DNS records are being populated with both the internal IP (ex. 10.0.10.2/xx) as well as the Hamachi IP (ex. 20.10.32.23/xx). What ends up happening is our backup software resolves server-file occasionally as the Hamachi IP address, but tries to access it via the physical network interface resulting in no connection being made. Our backup software fails to connect to server-file 2-3 times before successfully resolving and starting the backup process. (I vaguely recall Windows doing round-robin IP selection automatically for load balancing which is possibly why this is happening?)

I've been able to temporarily resolve this by removing the A records in our DNS server (also server 2012 R2 Std) that point server-file to the Hamachi IP address. After a while (I'm assuming a timer for DNS caching expires) the record get automatically added back to the server.

I've also attempted to resolve this myself by going into the Advanced portion of the IPv4 interface on the Hamachi virtual NIC and disable registering with DNS Services but the DNS record still populates eventually on the DNS server. (as per this related article on ServerFault. )

My question is - is there a way to somehow block or override specific automatically added DNS entries into the DNS server? I was thinking of modifying the hosts file on the affected server, but I don't want to get into obscure configuration territory.

Thanks :)

  • Maybe delete the dynamically created DNS record and manually create a new one? Making sure the permissions on the record do not allow server-file to modify it.
